“Citizens engagement in Matera 2019”

Watch the presentation

Matera 2019 is currently one of the two European Capitals of Culture. They came to share their experiences and introduce some projects they have put in place for the occasion. To deal with the audience engagement practices in the European Capitals of Culture, the team of Matera 2019 introduced the passport they’ve created for the whole year, which is a single ticket device to attend all the events of Matera 2019. The purpose of this passport is to promote and open access to culture for all, and, at the same time, propose a ‘license’ of temporary citizenship. We also discovered the citizen engagement in Matera 2019, through activities in the neighbourhoods, workshops and performances that enhance citizenship and the sense of building a project together. A way to include inhabitants and the audience even further in the process of creation and participation.

Born in Matera, economist Rossella Tarantino specializes in the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies, with the focus on education, culture and social innovation. She is the Development and Relations Manager at the Foundation Matera-Basilicata 2019.

In 2010, she was delegated by Regione Basilicata to Matera 2019 Committee for the preparation of the bid for the title of ECOC. As a project manager, she defined and ran the pilot projects and residencies aimed at strengthening the EU dimension and encompassing it in the city and citizen dimension, thus ensuring a close coordination between the bid strategy and the regional and urban policies. In addition, she took care of the preparatory work for setting up Matera-Basilicata 2019 Foundation.

From 1994 to 2001, she worked in Brussels and gained considerable experience in running and assessing cooperation programmes with third countries (India, Mediterranean countries) in the cultural and education fields. In addition, she designed and ran an EU project on storytelling and merchandising in museums.
